Are YounLooking To Up Your Average?

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “We are the average of the five people we spend the most time with.” And when you stop to think about it, it makes a lot of sense.
We’re all shaped, consciously and unconsciously, by the environments we place ourselves in. From the way we were brought up, to the foods we enjoy, to the way we speak and even the way we think about money or success — so much of it comes down to repetition and influence.
The thing is, we don’t always notice how much our surroundings affect us. Which is why making a conscious effort to improve your environment, and more importantly, the people you share it with, is absolutely vital if you want to improve your mindset and ultimately the results you achieve in life.
That’s why, just recently, I made the decision to “up my average” in a very deliberate way. I joined a Supercar driving tour with a fantastic group of people, most of whom were entrepreneurs, and most of whom were further up the ladder of success than me.
It was three days of fine dining, beautiful hotels, winding roads through stunning scenery, and of course, the thrill of incredible cars. On the surface, it was indulgent. But the reality is, it was an investment — not just in the experience itself, but in my mindset.
Because here’s the truth: the conversations I had on that trip were inspiring. The people I spent time with were energising. And even when I wasn’t consciously trying to learn, I know my unconscious mind was soaking it all in, like a sponge. It was the kind of environment that forces you to think bigger, raise your standards, and stretch your vision of what’s possible.
Now, let me be honest. Deciding to go wasn’t easy. Events like this don’t come cheap. I knew it could be an amazing opportunity, but there was always the risk that it might just be a flashy indulgence. Thankfully, I made the right call. Not every experience like this will pay off directly in business connections or deals, but from a mindset perspective, the value is huge.
Sometimes, the best investments we make aren’t in tools, or ads, or systems, but in the way we think.
So, how can you “up your average” without necessarily jumping into a Supercar? Here are a few simple ways:
• Seek out entrepreneurial communities. Join masterminds, networking groups, or online communities where ambitious people are sharing ideas and wins.
• Spend time with people further up the ladder. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee with someone you admire, attending an industry event, or even listening to a podcast, put yourself in the company of those who’ve achieved what you’re aiming for.
• Audit your current circle. Ask yourself honestly: are the people I spend most of my time with pushing me forward, or pulling me back?
• Invest in experiences. Sometimes it’s a course, sometimes it’s an event, sometimes it’s just saying yes to something that stretches your comfort zone.
Remember, you are the average of the people you surround yourself with. So if you want to change your results, start by changing your environment.
After all, the higher you raise your average, the higher you’ll rise with it.
